San Francisco Unified and Sacramento Unified School District SEIU 1021 members ratify historic contracts, keep momentum going

As we move into the holiday season, there is much to celebrate and rejoice over. Unions are winning their strongest contracts yet in school districts across Northern California. And, while several districts remain in bargaining, there is good reason to think that the positive trend of historic contracts will continue through to the new year!

Member interview: Bruce Boyer on Native American Heritage Month

SEIU 1021 member leader Bruce Boyer on a strike line

November is Native American Heritage Month, a month where we celebrate the traditions, languages, and history of Native Americans.

We sat down with SEIU 1021 member leader Bruce Boyer, who works at Sacramento City Unified School District as classified staff.

Q: What tribe are you with?

A: I’m with the Apache tribe.

Q: What issues do you see for Native Americans in the workforce, and how do unions help?

SEIU 1021 members welcome new Sacramento City Unified School District board members
The school board meeting on Dec. 15 was packed wall-to-wall with supportive union members

While packed school board meetings usually signal trouble brewing, the mood at the packed Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education meeting last week was festive. SCUSD classified staff — SEIU 1021 members — and educators represented by Sacramento City Teachers Association (SCTA) filled the room to overflowing to celebrate the induction of three new board members they had knocked on thousands of doors to get elected.

Sac City Schools Staff Vote by 99.8% to Ratify New Contract

Sacramento City Unified School District classified staff – including school bus drivers, nutrition service workers, instructional aides, custodians, and clerical staff – have voted by over 99% to ratify the tentative agreement they reached April 4 following a strike that shut down schools for eight days.

The agreement, which must be approved by the SCUSD Board of Education, contains significant victories, including:

TA Ratification Vote Next Week!
It's almost time to vote on our tentative agreement. Voting will take place Tuesday 4/19 and Wednesday 4/20.

We won our strike when we reached a historic tentative agreement (TA) that we are proud to bring to our members.

Our ratification vote for the TA will take place in person next Tuesday, April 19, and Wednesday, April 20. Times and locations are listed below. If you work at a feeder site, please plan on voting at the closest location in the list below.

Sac City Schools Classified Staff Went on Strike & Won Big!
Both SEIU 1021 and SCTA reached tentative agreements Sunday evening. The strike is now over.

“When we fight, we win! When we fights, students win!” was the mantra for the eight workdays (and twelve calendar days) of the Sacramento City Unified School District strike. Both classified staff–including school bus drivers, nutrition service workers, custodians, instructional aides, maintenance workers, and clerical staff–and teachers represented by Sacramento City Teachers Association (SCTA) went on strike starting March 23.

STRIKE OVER! We Have Reached a Tentative Agreement!
When We Fight, We Win. WE WON OUR STRIKE.

From the first day of our strike with SCTA on Wednesday, March 23, our mantra has been, “When we fight, we win. When we fight, students win.” You kept on showing up to the picket lines and our rallies day after day. You kept on sharing your stories, and the community kept on supporting us and demanding the superintendent and school board do their jobs. We are so happy to announce that our strike is over.

STRIKE UPDATE:  We’re Getting Close, and It’s Because of You!
Thanks to You, We Are Winning

Once again, you showed up and spoke out. You have kept on showing up to the picket lines morning after morning, even though you were exhausted and worried about how you were going to make rent. You came to the rally and made your voices heard, on stage, in the crowd, on the sidewalks, on social media, and to reporters and TV cameras. You shared your stories: the love and heart you put into the work you do. How hard it is to do your job–and how you wouldn’t want to do anything else–you just want basic dignity and respect at work.
