What's the Process?
SEIU Local 1021 represents public sector workers and private nonprofit workers.
If your employer has a collective bargaining agreement with SEIU 1021, becoming a union member is easy. You can call our Member Resource Center at 1-877-687-1021 to become a member.
If you and your coworkers are without a union at your workplace and would like to form one, contact us to get started. SEIU Local 1021 organizers will walk you through the process of forming a union if your workplace is eligible.
If you work for a private nonprofit, the process of unionization may need to go through the National Labor Relations Board. The NLRB is the governmental board that protects workers’ right to organize. The legal process is described on the NLRB webpage.
If you work in the public sector, your unionization process would be managed by the Public Employees Relations Board (PERB). The process for gaining legal recognition of a union as a bargaining agent is detailed on the PERB webpage. However, please be aware that jurisdictions are allowed to create their own rules, so you should check to see whether your jurisdiction has its own rules. SEIU Local 1021 can help you with that.
Do not let the legal process intimidate you. Forming a union is not something you do alone–the union is, first and foremost, your coworkers and you standing tall together and not backing down. If you and your coworkers stand strong for the changes you want to see in your workplace, SEIU Local 1021 will help you through the legal process every step of the way, and will continue to support you once you have won your union.
