Tuesday, June 2, dozens of SEIU 1021 members at Mendocino County confronted their Board of Supervisors at their bi-weekly meeting over the County’s short-staffing crisis.
The Board of Supervisors has broken Mendocino County.

Alameda Health System continues to push ahead with layoffs,
despite making zero effort at the ad-hoc committee to identify
additional revenue or other cost-saving measures. Even worse,
they are now discussing additional layoffs in the near
future while not being transparent about this with the unions
involved or the Board of Supervisors.
“AHS keeps trying to force concessions instead of chopping from
the top,” said SEIU 1021 AHS Chapter Vice President

Vacaville Unified classified staff ratify strong new contract after months of community action
On Thursday, May 28, Vacaville Unified School District classified workers overwhelmingly ratified a new two-year contract with a near-unanimous yes vote.

Contract negotiations with Alameda County have been going on for months, and so far, county management has been unwilling to listen to SEIU 1021 members tell them what they need: a fair COLA, affordable healthcare, and increased staffing that will create sustainable working conditions. No, the County’s focus has been increased healthcare costs and a COLA that keeps members falling behind.
On Thursday, members showed up en masse at a Board of Supervisors meeting to tell the supervisors that it’s time to get real and get a fair contract done.

Monday, May 25, was the Memorial Day holiday, but members of the Cal Academy Workers United chapter of SEIU 1021 were busy organizing nonetheless. They gathered outside the Chase Center to leaflet fans on their way into the Valkyries game to share what’s happening at the Academy and ask them to sign their petition against layoffs.

Last Thursday, May 21, was a big day for public health as SEIU 1021 members from Alameda Health System and Alameda County joined community members across the state to call for funding for healthcare.
In Sacramento, members from Alameda Health System called on the state assembly to prioritize healthcare and workers. Our state budget needs to put things like healthcare, food assistance, and behavioral health services first over giveaways for profitable corporations that are not paying their fair share.
Oakland Unified Schools members join coalition lobby day at the capitol, demand full Prop 98 funding for OUSD and California schools
On May 7, SEIU Local 1021 Oakland Unified School District Chapter President Trish Belenson and Alameda County COPE Delegate Juan “Carlos” Ocasio joined OUSD labor leaders from CTA, OEA, AFSCME, and BCTC, along with Superintendent Dr. Saddler, Board President Jennifer Brouhard, Board Vice President Valarie Bachelor, and Oakland City Council President Kevin Jenkins, to advocate for full Prop 98 funds for California schools.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health, at the direction of Mayor Lurie, is making deep cuts that disproportionately impact the city’s most vulnerable residents: seniors with mental illness, LGBTQ and homeless youth, new and expecting mothers facing tough health and/or personal challenges, medically fragile long-term care residents at Laguna Honda Hospital. While Mayor Lurie blames the city’s budget deficit for the cuts, he has come out against Prop D, which would bring in as much as $300M in revenue a year to protect public services like these.
California Gig Workers Union takes major step to represent gig rideshare drivers throughout the state
At a press conference today, Tuesday, May 12th, gig drivers from around the state announced that they filed a petition with the state requesting that the California Gig Workers Union (CGWU) represent them in collective bargaining negotiations with rideshare companies — a milestone in drivers’ effort to unionize under California’s newly enacted Assembly Bill 1340 (AB 1340). Over several months, drivers have collected tens of thousands of signatures from fellow gig workers seeking to form a union with CGWU.
Cal Academy members ramp up fight against layoffs with direct action, petition of no confidence in executive director
For the third time in five years, Cal Academy of Sciences Executive Director Scott Sampson has announced layoffs, this time affecting 37 SEIU 1021 Cal Academy Workers United (CAWU) members. The layoff list includes the entire planetarium team and the content developer team, which collaborated with several indigenous communities in California on the award-winning California: State of Nature exhibit.

On Thursday, May 7, over 130 classified SEIU 1021 members at the Vacaville Unified School District (VUSD), from paraprofessionals, to maintenance workers, custodians, transportation workers, clerks, and nutrition and IT workers, attended the VUSD school board meeting that evening to once more raise concerns about staffing shortages, workplace safety, and contract negotiations they say are affecting both employees and students.

Each election, SEIU 1021 members endorse candidates who will stand with us as we fight to win strong contracts and protect working standards.
Winning for our members is important. We do this by volunteering in elections and contributing to our Committee on Political Education (COPE) funds.
We urge members to participate in phone banking, canvassing, and other outreach initiatives to help us elect candidates who will fight for us and pass measures that will benefit workers across Northern California.
