Nurses complete continuing education courses in San Francisco

Article

SEIU 1021 partnered with the Education Fund to offer tuition assistance and continuing education course reimbursement for RNs and aspiring RNs.  It’s part of a commitment to ensure that all members have accessible training and resources for career advancement and development.

Eligible SEIU 1021 members who are registered nurses can receive up to $1,500 from the Education Fund and SEIU 1021 toward nursing-related educational expenses, including:

  • Continuing Education (CEUs)
  • License Renewal Fees (LVN, RN)
  • Initial/New License Fee (LVN, RN)
  • Professional Memberships
  • TEAS Prep
  • NCLEX Test Prep and Exam Fees

The union hosted two CEU courses in July, eight fully-paid-CE credit courses designed for eligible members who need to complete their continuing education requirements for licensures and certifications or for ongoing skill development.

One was held for San Joaquin & Calaveras Counties while another hosted CNAs and Patient Care Assistants from San Francisco & Alameda Counties, who packed the San Francisco union hall on Thursday, July 23. Members agreed this was very helpful to have an 8-hour course in one day rather than piecemeal classes that they would have had to find and pay for on their own.

“It’s really needed because it’s hard for us to have to find or go out of pocket to take CEUs and it’s important because if you don’t fulfill it they take you off the schedule without pay,” said SEIU 1021 member and Patient Care Assistant at SFGH Tereese Sanders.

There was appreciation across the board and our very own SEIU 1021 President Theresa Rutherford was in attendance as well given for her work as a CNA at Laguna Honda Hospital for the last two decades.

In addition to offering free continuing education unit classes, 1021 and the Ed Fund are partnered to support members with career development through:

  • Tuition support up to $5,250 for aspiring nurses
  • Continuing education reimbursements up to $1,500 for our current registered nurses

There are more career development opportunities available for aspiring nurses and currently registered nurses through a nursing grant.
