On Monday, January 22, the 51st anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, Planned Parenthood Northern California workers announced they have supermajority support to form a union with SEIU 1021.
Since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision ended federal protection for abortion rights, demand at some California clinics has quadrupled. This is straining the ability of clinicians, nurses, administrative and support staff, and social workers to sustain the ever heavier workloads.
Hayward Unified Schools classified workers ratify historic contract with improved wages and worker protections
SEIU Local 1021 members working for Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) voted this week to approve a new two-year contract. After 15 months of bargaining, SEIU 1021 members ratified the strongest contract they’ve had in years, with a 95% ‘yes’ vote for paraeducators/YEP and 99% for maintenance and operations and SAFECO.
Members covered by the new contract include facility and maintenance workers, campus safety officers, nutrition service workers, early childhood development workers, paraprofessionals, after school program workers, and custodians.

Bay Area Community Health (BACH) & Asian Health Services workers ask elected leaders for support at roundtable
In a pivotal meeting held this past Saturday, January 13, in San Jose, workers from Bay Area Community Health (BACH) and Asian Health Services met with local politicians and labor leaders. Their goal: to address pressing concerns regarding working conditions and retaliatory actions by BACH management against those attempting to unionize.
The gathering, attended by notable figures including California Senator Aisha Wahab, California Assemblymember Ash Kalra, and San Jose City Councilmember Peter Ortiz, was a platform for BACH workers to voice their concerns.
Over 200 SEIU 1021 members celebrate success at Sacramento unity party
Friday, January 12, more than 200 SEIU 1021 members attended a unity party in Sacramento, hosted by SEIU 1021 Regional Vice President Akbar Bibb.
Union members danced, enjoyed catered food, took pictures at a photo booth, and celebrated all the achievements they won through solidarity and union strength. Throughout the night, Akbar Bibb held periodic raffle giveaways of snacks, drinks, gift cards, and electronics.
SEIU 1021 members at City College of San Francisco vote to ratify contract with over 99% ‘yes’ vote
On Friday, January 12, SEIU 1021 members working for the City College of San Francisco (SFCCD) voted to ratify their new three-year contract, with 99.4% voting ‘yes.’
Classified workers are encouraged that with this new contract, members will be safer on the job and receive the support they need to strengthen and maintain an environment for everyone on campus to thrive.

HealthRIGHT 360 members ratify strong statewide contract
SEIU 1021 members at HealthRIGHT 360 joined forces with their coworkers across the state to negotiate a strong new contract to address short staffing and turnover. Late last month, they ratified the contract by an overwhelming 98%.
Felton United Workers unanimously ratify long-awaited new contract

On December 27, SEIU Local 1021 Felton United Workers voted unanimously to approve a historic new three-year contract after a year and a half of frustrating negotiations.
This is the strongest contract they’ve ever had with Felton. 100% of voting members supported the new contract.
Regional Center of the East Bay members get creative to win a great contract

Despite dysfunctional board & challenging circumstances, Mendocino County workers move forward to ratify union contract
Tuesday, December 19th, 2023, 700 Mendocino County workers – including road crews, public health nurses, and children’s social workers – voted to ratify a union contract with a 77% “yes” vote.
Hard-fought over nine months, this agreement will bring all classifications’ pay up to market rate. This agreement will also have Mendocino County pick up a higher percentage of the cost of employees’ healthcare. Ultimately, these improvements will begin to address the long-standing staffing issues that are harming Mendocino County’s children, seniors, and families.
