Mendocino Lake Community College employees demand board of trustees invest in Mendocino community
Wednesday, May 8, the union members who keep Mendocino Lake Community College running – including custodians, admissions staff, financial aid staff, and maintenance technicians – demanded that their board of trustees invest in the Mendocino community.
According to a report surveying workers in Mendocino County, “22% have experienced homelessness, with three percent currently homeless while working… 18% of respondents reporting applying for federal, state, and local programs to help with housing costs.”
SEIU 1021 members lobby state legislators to protect workers and the environment
Last week, San Francisco resilience GIS analyst and SEIU 1021 member Alex Morrison joined other SEIU members from across California to rally in Sacramento. They advocated for lawmakers to invest in public sector approaches to fighting climate change.
He said, “Addressing climate change will take an unprecedented effort, to keep fossil fuels in the ground and fundamentally change how we approach people meeting their needs in our society.
SFDPH nurses rally at Laguna Honda Hospital, announce strike authorization vote

Napa County & City of Napa members rally for a fair contract
More than 100 SEIU 1021 members from Napa County and City of Napa gathered at the Napa County administration building on Tuesday, May 7, to rally for improved working conditions and fair treatment for workers.
As negotiations continue for new contracts for both bargaining units, the workers highlighted the pressing need for increased cost-of-living adjustments to combat rising prices, reduce turnover, and fill vacancies.
SEIU 1021 members at Vacaville Unified Schools win huge grievance settlement
On April 22, SEIU 1021 won a settlement agreement to repay Vacaville Unified School District (VUSD) members approximately $180,000 after the district erroneously docked their pay.
Marin Housing Authority members ratify contract
Monday, May 6, SEIU 1021 members at Marin Housing Authority (MHA) ratified a tentative agreement that makes significant advances toward making MHA capable of attracting adequate levels of union staff. The ratification vote passed overwhelmingly by 96%.
Highlights of the new three-year contract include 12% over three years, including 6% the first year; a one-time $2000 bonus; 5% temporary vacancy premium pay; and the addition of Juneteenth as a holiday.
Purple Wednesdays in San Joaquin County
Like many of us in SEIU 1021, members in San Joaquin County have been dutifully donning purple every Wednesday for years. Since 2018, Region E Vice President Taffie Walter has made it her mission to get members into the spirit to build camaraderie and show solidarity to management across all chapters.
“It reminds us we are unified and together in a positive way,” said Taffie. “It also shows management the union is still present even when we may not be in bargaining.”

Region E gives out more than 350 turkeys during unity event
Rain couldn’t keep Region E members from coming together for their end-of-the-year unity event on Thursday, December December 21st – members gathered at the SEIU 1021 Stockton office to give out more than 350 turkeys to their fellow members.
Although the sky was dark and rainy, spirits were high.
SEIU 1021 Executive Board Statement Calls for Ceasefire in Gaza
Monday, November 6, the SEIU 1021 Executive Board held an urgent meeting after hearing concerns from dozens of members across Northern California about the need for the union to join labor unions and organizations around the world about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Coffee tastes better when its unionized: Peet’s Coffee workers hold rally after winning first union vote in North America
After voting fourteen to one to become the first unionized Peet’s Coffee location in the United States, Peet’s Coffee workers, now members of the Service Employees International Union Local 1021, held a rally on Saturday, January 28, 2023, in front of the coffeehouse in North Davis. The vote comes after nearly nine months of workers organizing with SEIU Local 1021 and Workers United, an SEIU affiliate organizing workers on the “Starbucks Workers United” campaign.
Fast food workers secure $2.2 million in wage theft violations, vow to continue their fight back against corporate greed
While fast-food corporations like McDonald’s Corporation, Burger King Corporation, Jack in the Box, Inc., and others attempt to roll back the significant gains with the passage of 2022’s Assembly Bill 257 – the Fast Food Accountability and Standards Recovery Act, or the FAST Recovery Act for short, fast-food workers continue the fight for higher wages, safer workspaces, and a union.
The Starbucks organizing momentum reaches the Bay Area amid national strike
What began as one unionizing effort at a Starbucks coffeehouse in Buffalo, New York, has spread across the United States to over six thousand five hundred workers at over two-hundred-fifty corporate-owned Starbucks stores in under one year.
