Join us as we raise up AAPI union leaders and celebrate with a special event

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! We’re celebrating this month and beyond, recognizing the critical contributions of our AAPI brothers and sisters to the union and our communities.

AAPI Heritage Month was officially designated in May of 1992, but the celebrations and recognition were already developing and have continued to grow across the country since the late 1970s, with government institutions, community organizations, and individuals all stepping in to share powerful histories, accounts, and accomplishments of the men and women who have helped build and continue to shape our country through their art, culture, labor, and activism.

As part of our celebration, we will be centering different AAPI community leaders throughout the month. This week, we recognize SEIU 1021 East Bay Vice President Yeon Park, a devoted union leader and community organizer, “I love that we can bring awareness to Asian American and Pacific Islander history and celebrate our cultures. It’s important to remember how AAPI people have been an important part of our shared history and struggle for a better life for all, nationally and locally. And that these communities continue to be a powerful force for change, especially in the labor movement.”

To keep the celebrations going, SEIU 1021 will host Here All Year: Celebrating AAPI Heritage With Family, a family-friendly event centering on AAPI arts, culture, workers, and activism on June 3rd from 11 am to 2:30 pm at Snow Park, Harrison St & 19th St, Lakeside Dr, Oakland, CA.

“AAPI contributions and heritage should be respected and honored any chance we get and not restricted to one time of year. This event is about celebrating and embracing AAPI heritage, so different generations and cultures can unite to honor distinct AAPI arts and cultures and the critical activism that helps grow our labor power together,” Park added.
