SEIU 1021 members across Yuba, Butte, Shasta, Sutter, Solano, Sacramento, and Napa counties (also known as Region A) are celebrating major victories in the nonprofit sector and at the ballot box, demonstrating what workers can accomplish when they organize and stand together.

At ChildStart, an early childhood education provider, members won substantial raises ranging from 8% to 30%, recognizing their essential work and helping recruit and retain experienced staff.

Members at Vitalant also won an important victory after management offered a $300 bonus exclusively to non-union workers. SEIU 1021 challenged the unequal treatment, and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruled that union workers were entitled to the bonus as well.

“Given the recent inflation, we were able to win meaningful raises to help us keep up,” said Kat McClelland, Donor Care Team Lead at Vitalant. “This will help us recruit and retain staff in our positions.”

Region A members also celebrated the election of fellow SEIU 1021 member Cassandra James as District 1 Supervisor. SEIU 1021 volunteers mobilized throughout the campaign, walking precincts, engaging voters at community locations, and making 5,000 calls on Election Day alone.

From winning better wages and fair treatment on the job to electing a union member to public office, Region A members are showing the power of collective action.
