The time to do nothing is long gone. With ever-growing examples of climate change’s harmful effects, it’s clear the consequences disproportionately affect working people and people of color. SEIU members, families, and communities are directly impacted by the threats of air and water pollution and extreme weather events.

Power plants are responsible for approximately 25% of the climate pollution that threatens our health and the health of our families, communities, and environment.

But there’s good news. The Biden administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a plan to cut power plant-generated carbon pollution by 617 million metric tons by 2042 (the equivalent of taking 134 million cars off the road).

We need to speak up. The rule faces stiff opposition from corporate powers that rely on their deep pockets and lobbying power to keep polluting while facing little to no accountability for the damage they cause.

“We must take rigorous measures to reduce some of the most significant sources of pollution in the fastest possible timeline. This proposal, if passed, is a crucial step in the right direction,” said Mary Sandberg, SEIU 1021 Vice President of Region B (North Coast).

Implementing strong, targeted policies is vital to hold power plants accountable and reduce and reverse the deadly impact of long-term temperature shifts and weather patterns.
