A successful strike: SF educators reach tentative agreement
Wins include sanctuary schools, expanded special education resources and wage increases
Contrary to superstition, this past Friday the 13th was anything but unlucky. United Educators of San Francisco (UESF) announced at 5:30 that morning that they had finally reached a tentative agreement with San Francisco Unified School District. This brought an end to the historic strike that began on Monday, February 9.
This agreement is a massive win for our educators, students, and
San Francisco. Solidarity was a buzzword last week, but it
proved to be more than just a word. It was a reality.
Solidarity is 20,000 people showing up at Dolores Park and
marching in the rain.
Solidarity is educators, students, parents, classified
professionals, and community members showing up at over 130
school sites across the city to picket, chant, hug, and tell the
district they’re not going anywhere. It was invigorating.
But for SEIU 1021 members at SFUSD, our fight is not over.
Our bargaining with the district continues.
We are hopeful that this win for UESF bodes well for SEIU 1021
members who work as clerks, food service workers, and community
schools coordinators at SFUSD, and who showed up on the picket
lines, rain or shine, last week.
We are hoping the spirit of solidarity remains alive as we
negotiate a critical contract for some of the district’s
lowest-paid workers.
What we once thought was impossible has now been proven possible.
Wins include:
- Fully funded family healthcare starting in 2027
- Sanctuary schools & housing
- Increased support for special education programs
- Fair wage increases
We must celebrate this victory, but we must also keep fighting.
We must keep speaking up, keep amplifying the importance of
supporting school workers. It’s working.
We want the district to know the same community that had SFUSD
educators’ backs will continue to support their union siblings in
our fight!
