SF museum security officers rally for safe staffing levels, transparency, and respect
SEIU 1021 SF Museum Civil Service Chapter museum security officers are standing together to demand safe staffing levels, transparency, and respect for the frontline workers who protect San Francisco’s finest art collections every day.
For months, officers have raised concerns about staffing cuts, reduced security coverage, operational changes, and lack of transparency. They have repeatedly tried to address these issues through established channels, but management has failed to take meaningful action. Saturday, June 13, they protested outside a party for socialite Dede Wilsey’s granddaughter outside the Legion of Honor Museum. Management tried to prevent the protected collective action by sending out an email discouraging staff from participating.
“Our members refuse to remain silent while decisions are made that weaken security operations and worsen working conditions,” said chapter president Raina Johnson. ”We are demanding management restore critical security posts and shifts, that they provide full transparency on the Argus Report—an outside consultant’s report that management has relied on to justify harmful cuts to staffing and security operations—and that they invest in frontline staffing and public safety.
“We call on museum patrons, labor allies, community members, and elected officials to support museum security officers in urging management to create a safer, stronger, and more accountable workplace. Strong museums depend on the workers who protect them.”
