SEIU 1021 steps up in a coalition to bring union jobs to the new green economy

Article

As part of the California Labor for Climate Jobs coalition, SEIU 1021 is on the front lines of linking workers’ rights and care for our environment, and with our political allies, we’re working to achieve big goals.

The coalition’s policy agenda includes:

  • Climate hazard protections
  • Safety nets for impacted workers and communities, reflected in Senate Bill 513
  • Good jobs in the low carbon economy, reflected in Senate Bill 787
  • Strong public sector and climate adaptive services, reflected in Assembly Bill 832

On May 6, 1021 SEIU 1021 VP for Politics Ramsés Teon-Nichols joined more than 30 union leaders from across California in Sacramento for a coalition lobby day that made headlines.

He said, “It’s important for us to use all the tools available to us, which is why we need to take advantage of opportunities for political action on the issues that are priorities for our members. Lobby days are great times for our members to get involved and make a difference.”

If you want to make sure that the effects of climate change don’t land hardest on working people and help get union members have a seat at the table as we transition away from fossil fuels, there are many great ways to get involved. You can join the SEIU 1021 Climate Justice Committee. You can also call your state representatives and ask them to support the bills listed above. Learn more at calaborforclimatejobs.org/.

As our siblings in SEIU Local 1000 said, “We demand a cleaner, climate-safe, and more equitable economy built on high-road, union jobs that support working families.” That’s a message we can all get behind!
