SEIU 1021 members came together for a powerful and joyful Black History Month celebration that honored the rich legacy of Black leadership in the labor movement while strengthening our collective commitment to justice today.

The evening was filled with energy, connection, and pride. Members broke bread over delicious food, enjoyed soulful entertainment that brought the room to life, and embraced the opportunity to gather in community. Music, laughter, and dancing reminded everyone that celebration is not only part of our culture—it is part of our resistance and resilience.

We were honored to welcome Congresswoman Lateefah Simon, whose inspiring remarks uplifted the historic role Black leaders have played in shaping both the labor movement and broader struggles for civil rights. Her words served as a powerful reminder that the fight for equity and dignity continues—and that union members remain at the forefront of that work.

Mayor Barbara Lee also joined the celebration, spending time connecting with members, taking photos, and sharing encouragement. Her presence underscored the strong ties between community leadership and organized labor, and members deeply appreciated the opportunity to engage with her directly.

AFRAM President Derrick Boutte reflected on the significance of the evening: “Black History Month is always a powerful time for reflection, but this year’s SEIU 1021 celebration was truly special. I enjoyed every moment—from the delicious food and soulful entertainment to the fellowship that filled the room with joy. Most of all, I was deeply moved by the inspiring words shared by our guests, especially Congresswoman Lateefah Simon, who reminded us of the historic role Black leadership has played in shaping the labor movement. Her remarks honored those who paved the way and challenged us to continue building power with courage and purpose. Events like this don’t just celebrate our history — they strengthen our commitment to carrying it forward.”

As SEIU 1021 continues fighting for racial, social, and economic justice across Northern California, this celebration served as both a tribute to the past and a call to action for the future. Together, we honor the legacy—and we build on it.
