On May 16, members of SEIU 1021 and the SEIU African American Solidarity Committee (AFRAM) came together for an evening of healing, culture, and community at the Safe Black Space 7th Anniversary Gala Fundraiser. Safe Black Space, a Black-led organization founded in the aftermath of the killing of Stephon Clark by Sacramento police, was created to provide culturally grounded, trauma-informed healing opportunities for Black individuals and communities.

Members from across the region—including Sacramento County, Sacramento City Unified School District, Los Rios Community College District, Solano County, and SEIU-UHW—gathered to celebrate and reflect through music, dance, art, and powerful spoken word performances. The evening was a reminder of the importance of intentional healing in the face of persistent anti-Black racism.

Attendees were inspired by keynote speaker Stevante Clark, the brother of Stephon Clark and a nationally recognized activist, who shared a powerful message about loss, resilience, and community healing. His words underscored the continued need for spaces like Safe Black Space, which equip Black communities with tools to navigate trauma, reclaim joy, and foster wellness.

“I went to the event because I wanted to be in a space with like-minded people and experience a space in which we can all come together with no problems and have a good time,” said Dominique Chadwick, who works in transportation for Sacramento City Unified School District. “I feel the event is important because it creates just that a safe space for us to enjoy one another and mix and mingle while share experiences with one another.”

“Attending the Safe Black Space gala was deeply meaningful to me as both a union leader and a social worker. It was a reminder that healing is not a luxury—it’s a necessity, especially for Black communities carrying generations of racial trauma. Spaces like this give us the tools to reclaim our joy, stand in our power, and build solidarity through wellness,” said Elizabeth Harrison, SEIU 1021 North Central regional vice president.

This growing relationship between SEIU 1021, AFRAM, and Safe Black Space reflects our union’s commitment to racial justice, mental health, and the power of collective care.
