Packing city council chambers, City of Richmond workers call for a fair contract
Last Tuesday, dozens of City of Richmond members with hundreds of years of combined experience filled city council chambers to demand a fair contract. The workers’ contract, and have been at the table for months, trying to get Richmond officials to address the staffing issues that keep Richmond residents from getting the services they deserve.
Members held FAIR CONTRACT NOW placards and unfurled a banner as their coworkers addressed the mayor and city council. Speakers highlighted their decades of service and their passion for the work they do. One payroll staffer quoted scripture and called on the elected officials to tell workers, simply, “Don’t worry. I got you.” Bargaining team member Henry Powell said, “Invest in us! We are loyal to the City and to our work. We work hard to make the city look the way it’s supposed to look.”
Chapter President Kevin Tisdell highlighted the long history of SEIU 1021 members working to enhance Richmond’s revenues, from Measure U to the Chevron settlement that will bring millions of dollars in.
This improved financial situation offers Richmond the chance to improve its recruitment and retention of workers, who have often sought greener pastures in other jurisdictions. Tisdell said, “Over the years, the City’s financial position has been strengthened by the work of our union, alongside councilmembers both current and former, to advocate for sustainable funding mechanisms.
“Today, the City finds itself in a vastly improved fiscal position, with a 21% reserve, a year-end surplus of nearly $17 million, and substantial savings due to an unusually high vacancy rate. Richmond now has the chance to become more competitive with comparable cities in the region. A strong and fair contract will not only acknowledge the dedication of current employees but also significantly improve recruitment and retention efforts.”
Chants of “When we fight — We WIN!” filled the chamber as the workers made their exit, and one thing is for sure: They won’t be done fighting until they do win.
