As Election Day approaches, SEIU 1021 proudly endorses Jennifer Brouhard for Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Board District 2 and Valarie Bachelor for District 6. Both candidates offer a proven record of commitment to Oakland’s students, staff, educators, and working families.

“I’m proud to join my fellow union members and community in knocking doors and getting out the vote! We need all hands on deck to make sure candidates like Jennifer Brouhard and Valarie Bachelor, who know our community and have a proven track record of fighting for our OUSD students and workers, are reelected,” said Occupational Therapist and OUSD Chapter President, Phoebe Nguyen.

Jennifer Brouhard is a longtime Oakland educator and former Oakland Education Association (OEA) executive board member and site representative, and has championed strengthening district finances, better working conditions for school employees, and fully staffed classrooms. She is a vocal supporter of unions and believes supporting union workers means investing in the people who support students every day.

Valarie Bachelor is director of ACCE Oakland and a former organizer with the California Federation of Teachers and SEIU International, bringing years of labor-organizing experience. As OUSD School Board Vice President, she has advocated for fully funded schools, safe and welcoming facilities, and stronger support for school workers and their communities.

Brouhard and Bachelor reflect the work OUSD members have been leading to strengthen public education in Oakland and ensure students, staff, and faculty have the resources they need to succeed. Their priorities center on a shared principle: strong public schools depend on sustainable funding and a strong workforce.

To keep making progress for our students and school community, we must maintain a majority of OUSD Board members who support a student-centered budget and a positive vision for Oakland schools.

“My coworkers and I are taking action to defend our pro-worker and pro-student school board from the billionaires that want to privatize public education in Oakland. We have committed our Saturday mornings to ensure we win this November because the stakes are too high. Join us to re-elect Jennifer Brouhard and Valarie Bachelor to the OUSD school board!” said Occupational Therapist at OUSD and SEIU 1021 member, Sienna Kuykendall

We must beat the billionaire-backed candidates trying to privatize public education in Oakland!
