SEIU Local 1021’s Social and Economic Justice Committee and Lavender Committee proudly marched in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community at this year’s Oakland Pride celebration on Sunday, Aug.16 through downtown Oakland in celebration of equality, inclusion, and union solidarity.

The Parade brings thousands of people together to celebrate the strength, resilience, and diversity of our community. The parade started at Grand Avenue and Broadway and ended at Frank Ogawa Plaza /Oakland City Hall, where the festival continued. About 20 members joined the contingency and well over 100 people enjoyed popcorn throughout the day. 

 SEIU Local 1021 set up a purple tent to welcome members to stop and enjoy free hot and fresh popcorn, pick up SEIU Local 1021 Pride giveaways and swag, and meet fellow union members, staff, and committee members.

“SEIU 1021 represents more than 60,000 employees from different cultural backgrounds, education levels, and family dynamics. One of those types of families are gay families,” said SEIU 1021 Lavender Committee member and Executive Board Member Monique Baca. ”We represent families in San Francisco which is known for being a safer space for LGBTQIA+ community. There was a long and hard fought road to get to where we are today. With the current administration we must continue the fight as our community remains under attack simply for existing and daring to live our truths. SEIU 1021 members should know that in the union, families that look like mine are embraced and accepted, not just tolerated.”
