Hayward Unified School District’s Maintenance and Operations SAFECO workers add noon supervisors to their chapter

Article

In a major win for classified employees in Hayward Unified School District (HUSD), the SEIU 1021 Maintenance and Operations (M&O) SAFECO chapter has officially added the noon supervisors into its ranks. This group, long dedicated to supporting students and school communities, will now enjoy the protections and benefits of the M&O SAFECO chapter’s union contract.

On September 5, 2025, SEIU 1021 M&O SAFECO chapter leaders met with the District’s labor relations team, accompanied by five noon supervisor representatives. During this meeting, the parties signed the recognition clause, officially bringing approximately 80 noon supervisors into the bargaining unit. This important step also kicked off much-needed negotiations on wages, benefits, and working conditions for these new members.

The momentum continued the following week at the HUSD School Board meeting on Wednesday, September 10, where around 30 noon supervisors, joined by supportive parents, participated in a speak-out. Speakers praised the Board for recognizing the vital role these workers play and called on HUSD to honor their decades of service by negotiating fair compensation and workplace protections.

“Through our years of dedicated service, we have taken on a wide range of responsibilities and have supported our schools in every way, such as translation, custodial work, cafeteria duties, administrative duties, childcare, and classroom support, without additional compensation for these extra duties. We are barely making over $17 an hour. We look forward to addressing our wages and working conditions in negotiations,” said HUSD Noon Supervisor Yessica Ayala.

Many of these noon supervisors have given over 20 years of service to HUSD.

Now, with union representation, they are ready to fight for the dignity, respect, and equity they deserve.

SEIU 1021 is proud to welcome these essential workers into the M&O SAFECO family and to stand with them as they join our union and the wider labor movement.
