The City Wants to Gut Civil Service Rules

Article

One of the cornerstones of our work is a fair, seniority-based process for promotion. This week, the City blamed their inability to hire people on the civil service rules that try to ensure fair treatment.

The City wants to rip up and throw away the rules that let our workers get ahead, and they have proposed:

  • Opening up opportunities for external candidates at the same time as for internal candidates (so they can hire their friends and family)
  • Recalculating seniority, from the most recent exam date, not from hire date

This is a full-frontal assault on one of the most important areas of our contract, and we won’t stand for it.

The City has also made wage proposals to every other union, but not to us.  When we made our wage proposal, City representative Charles Sakai, a lawyer who charges Oakland more than $400 an hour, repeatedly demanded to know what our “justification” was for proposing our members be able to make a decent living and provide for their families, while inflation spikes and even rent-controlled properties in Oakland rents are set to raise rates by 6.7%.

Our elected Bargaining Team is working to negotiate a strong new contract that will improve our wages, benefits, and working conditions, and they need your help!

A Chapter Action Team (or CAT) helps our union win by:

  • Keeping coworkers and supporters informed, involved, and inspired by updating them in person and by distributing bargaining updates, action alerts, and meeting notices
  • Leading actions that show City management our unity and strength in numbers: examples of actions include petitions, informational pickets, and purpling up with stickers, t-shirts, or buttons

Recruiting and mobilizing other members and community members to stand with us
