Alameda Health System workers defeat layoff attempt
When we fight, we WIN!
In a misguided attempt to “modernize” at the expense of workers and the community, Alameda Health System management recently tried, and failed, to replace cafeteria clerks with self-service kiosks. This half-baked proposal would have eliminated SEIU 1021 members’ jobs and removed the option to pay with cash, harming the low-income patients AHS is meant to serve.
Members rejected this proposal immediately and started taking action, repeatedly confronting management, creating a petition, distributing it, collecting signatures in support of keeping the clerks, and building alliances in the community to protect these jobs and the services they provide.
In the end, not one job was lost.
Chapter President Veronica Palacios said, “Our members put up a big fight, collected over 3.000 signatures, and attended the Board of Trustees meetings twice! They did not give up! Union power was shown through strength in numbers and determination! Thank you to CIR, the Alameda Labor Council, and ACMEA for showing support to our account clerks!”
When SEIU 1021 members stand united, we have the power to overcome any challenge and win the respect, protections, and improvements we all deserve. Together, nothing can stop us!
