LETTER IS AS FOLLOWS -

To management:

The members of the union of the Asian Art Museum Foundation are reaching out with a desire to continue working with you in good faith and to address growing concerns amongst our membership about recent issues regarding bargaining unit work.

Our membership is noticing an alarming trend: the absorption of longstanding union duties into management positions (the work of Assistant Librarian, Visual Merchandiser, and Digital Marketing Coordinator). During our recent contract negotiations, the union proposed language that would address this issue, but management was not interested in working with us on its inclusion. We are now seeing an increase in management dissolving our bargaining unit positions and expanding management roles. This is an important issue to our Membership and we insist that management cease and desist until we can return to the bargaining table.

Failure to work in a mutually agreed upon way contributes to a sense of confusion and job insecurity for our staff and also limits opportunities for professional development in our organization.

We understand the institution is still in a period of transition and want to ensure that we are all able to work together through the evolution of this museum and personnel changes to our mutual benefit. However, following on the heels of difficult and less than collaborative contract negotiations, the absorption of union positions into Management positions does not bode well.

We have seen some encouraging collaboration with issues recently shared with HR around job descriptions and posting positions, and we appreciate the willingness of new leadership in that department to work with us and the timely remediation in those instances. We hope to move forward with that same sense of collaboration with you. We invite you to work with us to inspire confidence in our staff by addressing our collective concerns.

Signed,
