Language Justice Needs Assessment Project – SEIU 1021 Staff Survey
This project aims to fulfill a commitment SEIU leadership made to delegates at the 2024 SEIU International Convention. The International Union (IU) will implement a Language Justice (LJ) needs assessment with locals, as recommended by the Resolutions Committee.
The goal is to assess local union support needs and their capacity to advance our union’s journey on language justice. This effort complements ongoing support the International Union already offers to locals requesting language justice support. At the same time, we recognize that several SEIU locals have already set up their own language justice structures to support their needs and may serve as information resources for this assessment and for union-wide sharing/learning.
The International Union views language justice work as fundamental to building a forward-looking, cross-racial, multi-generational, and multilingual union and labor movement. As outlined in SEIU’s core Resolution, language justice is critical to achieving our union-wide goals. Both resolutions resolve to uphold language justice, assess local union support needs, cultivate and sustain a culture of language justice at every level of the union. This assessment will result in a report with recommendations to the International Executive Board.
