Our democracy is at stake as the Trump-appointed Supreme Court is siding with Republican parties across the country who are redrawing district lines to disenfranchise the vote of underserved and Black communities. We still struggle for representation and economic prosperity well after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. These problems that continue to plague our country generations after the civil rights movement.

So join the Social and Economic Justice Committee on Friday, August 28 from noon – 2 p.m. as SEIU 1021 members, community allies, elected officials, and faith leaders will gather on the steps of San Francisco City Hall to commemorate on the 63rd anniversary of Dr. King’s historic speech. Together we will stand in defense of voting rights, democracy, and justice.

The “Defend the Vote” event will take place in support of the “March on Washington” and “Defend the Vote 2026″ happening the same day.

“We must defend the vote. Trump is dismantling the Voting Rights Act, a bill which restores and strengthen parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, most notably its requirement for states and jurisdictions with a history of voting rights violations to seek federal approval before enacting certain changes to their voting laws,” said Social & Economic Justice Committee Chair Phelicia Jones.

Stand together. Protect democracy. Honor Dr. King’s legacy.

RSVP today to join us. LUNCH WILL BE SERVED & TRANSPORTATION IS AVAILABLE AT SOME LOCATIONS. Bus pick up is 11:45 a.m.
