In these pivotal moments, unity amongst working people is our strongest shield against a federal government shutdown. The shutdown will cause harm to union members and the broader American public.  

“The government shutdown hurts all of us,” said SEIU 1021 President Theresa Rutherford. “Millions of children will go hungry. Workers will not be able to provide for their basic needs without a paycheck. The decision to shut down the government is cruel and destructive. We demand that politicians put aside their petty grievances, act like adults, and do their jobs by passing the budget and ensuring that the people of the United States are not harmed.”

Make no mistake, a government shutdown would result in 110,000 children losing access to Head Start slots; 60,000 seniors being robbed of nutrition services like Meals on Wheels; 2.1 million women, infants, and children being waitlisted for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC); and 40,000 fewer teachers, aides, and support staff, affecting 26 millions students in schools that teach low-income students and 7.5 million students with disabilities.
