A statement from President Joseph Bryant on the verdict in the Ahmaud Arbery trial

Post

“Today, a jury in Georgia found Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William Bryan Jr. guilty of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. This conviction gets right what our justice system too often gets wrong by affirming the right of Black people and people of color to live free from intimidation, violence, and murder.

Today’s verdict may hold these men accountable for their racist murder of Ahmaud Arbery, but we must remember that the justice we seek is far greater than that which any jury can deliver. True justice will only be realized when we bring forth a world where all people—no matter who we are, what we look like, where we come from, or who we love—can live with prosperity, dignity, and equal opportunity.

As a union that unites 60,000 working people across race and other backgrounds and identities, we remain committed to actively dismantling structural racism and continuing our fight for justice and dignity both in and out of the workplace.”
