Location: Northern California
Primary Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Executive Director, this position has the responsibility to –
• Take responsibility for overall development of the Local’s Field, Program and Operations staff training, development and accountability programs including implementing local-wide and regional staff training and development programs in consultation with the Executive Director, Head of Operations & Labor Relations and Ex. Board members.
• Oversee the development of new training curriculum, regularly review and update existing offerings, and conduct workshops/programs to enhance the success of field staff/members in moving the mission of the Local forward.
• Collaborate with senior team to assure integration of professional staff development in scope of departments and regional activities.
• Facilitate/guide the senior team and senior member leaders ongoing organizational planning and development.
• Oversee the design and assist in the delivery of program and curriculum on a wide variety of topics aligned with the vision and goals of the Local including new member orientation, mapping, leadership development, the locals membership campaign-TWR, power analysis, racial justice, member engagement, contract campaigns, train the trainer, conducting meetings, industry programs and structures, political education and organization building.
• Provide effective support and leadership to Directors and Ex. Board to assist them in making sure that the member engagement plan is integrated into the structure and programmatic work of the union.
• Serve as the local’s programmatic/field liaison with the Local’s Member Resource Center Membership Director.
• Develop means of measuring the various staff roles in consultation with the senior team, including staff work plans and effective staff evaluation systems and work with Directors and Ex. Board members to implement same.
• Coordinate strategic high priority bargaining campaigns.
• Coordinate and convene regional and sectoral bargaining conferences to develop and execute local-wide strategies.
• Develop and train field staff to improve bargaining skills and contract campaign capacity of the local.
• Educate staff on local bargaining standards and best practices contract language and campaign methods.
• Direct the Collective Bargaining Program and supervise the Collective Bargaining Coordinator and Field Reps assigned to collective bargaining.
• Conduct new employee orientation and onboarding for all newly-hired field and program staff.
• Supervise the training and development of field staff hired as direct-temp hires and/or “bootcamp.”
• Ensuring staff development pipelines to prepare internal staff to promote successfully to supervisory positions in the Local.
• Perform other related duties as required/assigned by the Executive Director, including leading contract negotiations where appropriate.

• Ability to lead, motivate and inspire other staff leaders, members and member leaders.
• Strong sense of the big picture and environment within which member engagement, action and leadership will occur.
• Strength in innovation and creativity especially related to new programs and strategies and creating and developing new roles for member leaders.
• Exceptional relationship skills including the ability to quickly engage others interpersonally.
• Very strong communication skills – both verbal and written.
• Strong organizational and political savvy.
• Ability to handle confidential personnel matters related to staff evaluation and development.
• Knowledge of collective bargaining strategies, techniques, and legal background.
• Familiarity with bargaining across public and private sector and multiple types of workplaces.
• Ability to develop and deliver curriculum to diverse groups of staff and workers.
• Strength at one-on-one and small group coaching and mentorship of staff.
• Demonstrated ability to formulate and deliver short and long-term commitments.
• Proven ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• Proven ability to win organizing campaigns and provide effective leadership.
Preferred Experience:
• 7+ years of experience working for a galvanizing union member to get involved in various union programs.
• 3+ years developing and implementing programs to enhance member participation.
• 3+ years experience in developing staff and member training programs.
• 5+ years directing staff.
• Ability and experience in developing and implementing staff development and staff accountability programs.
• Strong facilitation and planning skills.
• Very strong change leadership and change management skills and experience background.
• Experience working as part of a team highly desirable.
Requirements:
• Salaried position; may require nonstandard work hours and/or weekend and holiday work.
• Extensive travel may be required, primarily within Northern California.
• Must possess a current valid driver’s license, auto insurance that covers business driving and an automobile for business use; must pass a DMV check and have a good driving record; must have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum coverage of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident of bodily injury liability/$50,000 property damage liability, and list SEIU Local 1021 as an “additional insured” or “interested party” in order to trigger notification in the event the policy is cancelled); and must possess an automobile for business use.
Salary and benefits: The current salary range is $141,228.34-$162,412.53 based on qualifications and experience. SEIU Local 1021 offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package.
