Defend the Vote: SEIU 1021 Members to Honor Dr. King’s Legacy and Stand Up for Our Rights

On Friday, August 28, SEIU 1021 members and community allies will gather on the steps of San Francisco City Hall to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech and stand together in defense of voting rights, democracy, and justice.

The Defend the Vote event will take place from 12 noon to 2 p.m. and is being held in support of the March on Washington and Defend the Vote 2026.

Hosted by SEIU 1021 President Theresa Rutherford and Social & Economic Justice Committee Chair Phelicia Jones, the event will bring together labor unions, community organizations, elected officials, community leaders, and faith partners.

“We must Defend the Vote. According to the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, the bill would restore and strengthen parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, most notably its requirement for states and jurisdictions with a history of voting rights violations to seek federal approval before enacting certain changes to their voting laws, which Trump is dismantling,” said Social & Economic Justice Committee Chair Phelicia Jones

More than six decades after Dr. King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech during the 1963 March on Washington, his call for equality and justice continues to resonate. SEIU 1021 members are carrying that legacy forward by standing together to defend our rights, protect our democracy, and continue the fight for justice for all.
