SAN FRANCISCO—On June 9 at noon, members of SEIU and other local unions will gather with immigrant activists outside of the California State Building to protest the unlawful ICE raids in L.A. and the Trump administration’s subsequent escalation of calling in the National Guard in response to the ensuing peaceful protests, and to demand that David Huerta, president of SEIU California and SEIU United Service Workers West (USWW), be released from federal detention. David Huerta was injured and unlawfully detained while exercising his First Amendment rights as an observer during a massive ICE raid in downtown Los Angeles. His arrest reminds working people of the dangers of unchecked power and the urgency of collective action.
“The Trump administration’s cruel attack on immigrants is an attack on all of us. With this persecution of hard-working immigrants with no criminal record, separating parents from their children and tearing apart our communities, they threaten our democracy, our civil rights, and our human rights — our very right to exist. Yet if we live in fear, they win. We must not give in to fear. Now more than ever, we must stand up for justice. We must stand up for each other. We call to an end to the raids and the immediate release of those detained, including President Huerta. Our union will not stop fighting until the rights and dignity of all immigrants are respected,” said SEIU 1021President Theresa Rutherford.
Olga Miranda, president of SEIU local 87, who represents janitors and other property services workers, blasted the ICE raids and the use of force against peaceful protesters as dangerous and inhumane. “Over the weekend I’ve seen the Trump administration efforts turn a peaceful community into a war zone. We’ve had enough of the Trump administration terrorizing communities of color and working people just trying to support their families. We will not stand for it.”
