OAKLAND, CA—On Friday, December 19, after 10 months of negotiations, SEIU Local 1021 members working as early childhood education instructional aides, instructional support specialists for special education, early literacy reading tutors, culture keepers, climate ambassadors and clerical support, and many other support services classifications for Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) voted to approve one of the strongest union contracts they’ve ever secured. This groundbreaking contract will include a 16% wage increase over the course of the contract, and a critical $25 per hour minimum wage for the lowest-paid workers, in addition to safer working conditions that benefit staff and students.
“This is a fair and dignified contract we can all be proud of, made possible because of the support of our membership and other bargaining units,” said SEIU 1021 Chapter President Trish Belenson, a library technician with OUSD. “Standing together allowed us to gain critical improvements in working conditions, plus much-needed raises and a precedent-setting $25 an hour minimum wage. This is a win for our members, students, and community.”
In addition to hard-fought wage increases, new contract highlights include limits on outsourcing work that should be performed by trained classified professionals, a summer assistance program for 10-month employees, an additional 15-minute rest period for six-hour employees, and improved language regarding the use of AI. Union members anticipate that these additions will offer greater stability for classified professionals, reduce turnover, and increase consistency for students.
“Our progress is a reminder of what becomes possible when people
come together with hope and intention,” added administrative
assistant Ma. Elena Perez. “With the support of our community and
the steady work of our bargaining team, we reached an agreement
that uplifts our students and our school. This moment belongs to
all of us.”
