1021 Fights For Higher Wages And Safer Workplace Conditions, While The City Refuses To Budge

Article

At our most recent meeting, the City of Oakland management countered our wage proposal with 3-3-3, which doesn’t even keep up with the rising cost of living. Our proposal on wages would keep up with the cost of living and help workers stay in the Bay Area.

Management rejected our proposal to increase the annual dental cap even though it hasn’t increased since 2002.

While doing nothing to combat favoritism in hiring, management maintains its proposals to gut civil service rules and merit hiring.

We proposed increased safety measures to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. Management responded with a monthly committee that doesn’t even meet as much as we are already meeting with the City on COVID issues.

A Chapter Action Team (or CAT) helps our union win by:

  • Keeping coworkers and supporters informed, involved, and inspired by updating them in person and by distributing bargaining updates, action alerts, and meeting notices
  • Leading actions that show City management our unity and strength in numbers: examples of actions include petitions, informational pickets, and purpling up with stickers, t-shirts, or buttons
