LOCATION: Northern California

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting directly to the Executive Director (Lead Director), this position assists, advises and represents the Local on behalf of the Executive Director; and the successful candidate will:

Work with the Executive Director to build organizational capacity for strategic planning, growing the union, building internal and external relationships and advancing SEIU programs consistent with the local’s Vision for Power.

Act as liaison between the Executive Director and others within the organization.

Perform ‘advance’ activities including research, outreach and other preparations for the functions the Executive Director is attending.

Attend meetings on behalf of the Executive Director.

Complete the loop on actions requiring follow through.

Assist strategic planning and goal setting activities.

Troubleshoot varied and complex problems applying strategic analysis.

Provide concise assessments and recommendations.

Assist Executive Director with staffing and personnel matters including investigatory interviews, staff grievances, and disciplinary actions.

Assist in recruitment and hiring process of new field and program staff.

Coordinate special projects such as blitzes, staff transitions, and training.

Maintain standardized reporting systems in coordination with senior staff.

Prepare reports and presentations.

Assist in development, preparation and facilitation of senior staff meetings.

Assist Executive Director in resolving member complaints.

Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

Experience representing and/or supporting an executive, preferably in a union setting.

Substantial professional experience organizing working class people towards change.

Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically.

REQUIREMENTS:

Salaried position; may require nonstandard work hours and/or weekend and holiday work.

Extensive travel may be required, primarily within Northern California.

Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license; must pass a DMV check and have a good driving record; must have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$50,000 property coverage); and must possess an automobile for business use.
