Our SF Registered Nurse team has reached a tentative agreement!

Post

At 7:30 AM and after 22 hours of mediation, our Registered Nurse bargaining team signed a Tentative Agreement (TA) for a new RN contract with the City and County of San Francisco. The TA includes progress on many of the priorities identified by members and your elected bargaining team: recruitment and retention of nurses, chronic understaffing, safety, and over-reliance on temps and travelers.

Our tentative agreement includes:

  • A historic investment in the city workforce

    • A 10% pay increase over two years
      • 5.25% on July 1, 2022
      • 4.75% in the second year
    • In order to address the problem of retaining experienced nurses, to support longevity at DPH, and market conditions specific to nursing, most of our members will receive increases in their salary steps worth an additional 1-2%.
  • Commitments to staff up vital services
    • An additional 58 permanent FTEs added to the budget on top of the 142 current budgeted vacancies, to be used towards the Emergency Department, Laguna Honda, the Birth Center, PACU, Jail, Psychiatry, primary care, and Med/Surg.

    • To incentivize DPH to do better at providing sufficient staff that we can take our rest breaks, nurses who miss their 15-minute rest breaks will be entitled to time-and-a-half for that time as well. It is very rare for public sector nurses to receive extra pay for missed rest breaks in California.
  • No takeaways or concessions

The items listed above represent only a portion of the victories we secured in negotiations this year. For a full list of our victories, please be sure to attend an upcoming membership meeting.

The RN bargaining team voted to recommend this TA for ratification by the membership. We got to this TA as a result of years of advocating for stronger revenue and investment for public services, and by staying united with our union allies across San Francisco as we shared our collective message into the streets, in the news, and in our worksites.
