SEIU Local 1021 was founded in 2007 when 10 local unions came together in northern California to form one larger, more powerful union. LOCATION: Northern California

EXPERIENCE: This entry-level position is open to any newly recruited staff that has less than one (1) year of full-time paid experience doing worker organizing.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the close supervision of a Lead Organizer, Campaign Coordinator(s), and Organizing Director, the Organizer in Training (OIT) will complete a formal and informal training program, including extensive on-the-job training designed to develop necessary skills. During this time the OIT will be assigned to campaigns whereby they will learn and be evaluated on a core group of skills and standards necessary to operate independently as an organizer. This is not a 9 to 5 job, and includes long and varied hours, with early morning, evening, and weekend work, as necessary. May require travel and periods of overnights.

SKILLS, APTITUDE, AND COMMITMENT: We need people who have positive energy, excellent communication skills, persistence, the ability to learn quickly, and work long and irregular hours with a dedication to social and economic justice.

The ideal candidate is also someone who is:

  • Able to work independently, as well as part of a team.  
  • Dedicated to improving the position of working people and strengthening the role of organized labor in society through work actions, community relations, and legislative and political activity. 
  • Able to work effectively with members and staff from diverse groups and identities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: You will conduct worksite meetings and house visits with workers; facilitate worksite meetings with workers; develop weekly and monthly plans based on overall campaign goals; identify worker issues; mobilize workers for public actions; track worker data; and identify and recruit worker leaders.

REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid California driver’s license; must pass a DMV check and have a good driving record; must have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$50,000 property coverage); and must possess an automobile for business use.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: The current salary range is $61,980 based on qualifications and experience. There is a competitive and comprehensive benefits package.
