On July 13, workers across the United States came
together to demand jobs, care, and justice in a day of
action that spanned at minimum 15 US cities. In California, SEIU
members held simultaneous events in Oakland and Los Angeles
calling for bold, transformative solutions to create an
economy and democracy that works for all of us.

On August 2 of this year, SEIU 1021 will welcome David Canham as its new Executive Director. He will be replacing John Stead-Mendez, who has been with us since 2013 but is moving on to join National Nurses United as Director of their Veterans Administration Division.

What is your name, title, and chapter?
I’ve worked for SFUSD for the last 38 years in the Environmental Health Department. I also serve as the SFUSD Chapter President.
Is this your first time as a chapter delegate for the convention?
No, I’ve been a delegate a few times over the years and attended many conventions in the past as a Delegate.

I work for Oakland Unified School District as an Accounting Clerk in the Facility Dept. I am also the First Vice President for the OUSD chapter.

This is my second time as a chapter delegate.
What was your experience as a first-time delegate?
City of Berkeley Clerical and Maintenance Workers Stick Together and Win a Strong Contract
Early in the morning of June 24, the City of Berkeley’s elected Bargaining Teams for the Clerical and Maintenance chapters reached a tentative agreement with City representatives. The new three-year contract keeps medical and dental benefits at their current levels, and includes cost of living adjustments of 4% in the first year, 3% in the second, and 1% in the third, along with a signing bonus after ratification.
