In a huge victory on Friday, Judge Roesch of the Alameda Superior Court ruled that Proposition  22 violates the Constitution of the State of California, meaning the gig industry-funded ballot initiative is unconstitutional and is therefore unenforceable.

The campaign for electing the next California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) Board of Administration goes on. One of the candidates running for re-election as a member of the Board of Administration is David Miller. First elected in 2017, Miller is running for a second term on the Board as a Member-At-Large Seat A.

According to recent polling, if the election to recall Governor Gavin Newsom were held today, he would lose. Without a worker-friendly governor in office, our jobs would be in jeopardy, and our communities would be left with less of the support they need.

The race for the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) Board of Administration is on. One of the candidates running for a seat on the Board of Administration is Jose Luis Pacheco, an IT professional for the San Jose Evergreen Community College District. Pacheco also serves as the Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the member-owned Santa Clara County Federal Credit Union. Additionally, Pacheco sits on the Board of Directors for Latinas Contra Cancer, a non-profit that addresses Breast Cancer health disparities in the Latina community.

Managing pension and health benefits for more than 1.6 million California public employees, retirees, and their families, the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) is the largest public pension fund in the United States. At the top of the CalPERS executive branch agency is the Board of Administration.

City of Berkeley workers in the Community Services and Part-Time Recreation Leaders Association chapter tried a bold new strategy for negotiating their new contract, and used it to build unity and win a good contract, comparable to their SEIU 1021 siblings in Clerical and Maintenance. The strategy is called “open bargaining,” and it seeks to involve every member throughout the fight for a contract.

This year, five SEIU Local 1021 members were accepted into the UC Berkeley Labor Center’s CL Dellums African American Leadership School. This six-week program brings together and trains young emerging leaders to strengthen the connection between the Black community and the labor movement and promote the interests of Black workers within their unions and their communities.
