Saturday, September 25, 538 voting delegates and rank and file members, staff, and guests showed up for the SEIU Local 1021 Virtual Convention for four hours of powerful talks from special guest speakers, discussion, and debate, as well as some entertainment and fun. The task before the voting delegates: to lay out the union’s priorities for the next three years.

The 2021 SEIU 1021 Convention is only weeks away, and we’ve been busy lining up dynamic speakers, engaging workshops, and an amazing program. Our convention platforms will focus on six key areas of our work: Economic Justice, Racial Justice, Climate Justice, Unions for All, Reclaiming Our Democracy, and Member Unity and Power.
When we fight, we win. We beat back the anti-union recall!
Last night, a threat to California’s democracy was thwarted. The California gubernatorial recall election failed. With almost eighty percent of the vote counted so far, nearly sixty-four percent of voters, rejected the right-wing, anti-union recall of Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.

together to demand jobs, care, and justice in a day of
action that spanned at minimum 15 US cities. In California, SEIU
members held simultaneous events in Oakland and Los Angeles
calling for bold, transformative solutions to create an
economy and democracy that works for all of us.

On August 2 of this year, SEIU 1021 will welcome David Canham as its new Executive Director. He will be replacing John Stead-Mendez, who has been with us since 2013 but is moving on to join National Nurses United as Director of their Veterans Administration Division.

In San Francisco and Sacramento, thousands of union members take to the streets to celebrate International Workers’ Day
On May 1, people across the globe took to the streets to celebrate International Workers Day and champion causes to support unions and working people. In Northern California and across the country, May Day celebrations called for the passage of the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, which will empower workers to exercise our freedom to organize and negotiate for better wages and working conditions.
STRIKE AVERTED: Sac City USD workers reach 11th hour TA with management on health and safety standards
Classified workers at Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) have been negotiating with Superintendent Aguilar and the District for months to reach a fair baseline health and safety agreement that will protect students, workers, and the entire school community.
Days before workers were set to participate in an Unfair Labor Practice, however, a marathon mediation session produced a tentative agreement between the two sides just before midnight on Monday, April 19.
