SEIU Local 1021’s Internship for Leader Development is looking for energetic and motivated members who are committed to working for social and racial justice, believe in the value of work, the democratic process, and the importance of public services. This program will train and mobilize members who want to unleash their leadership potential.

On Monday, July 20, our members in San Francisco, the East Bay, and Sacramento joined tens of thousands of workers nationwide in more than 25 cities in solidarity with the #StrikeForBlackLives.

Our union has a vision for a just society where all workers are valued and all people respected, no matter where they are from or the color of their skin. All families deserve to thrive in a more just and equitable but until Black communities and other communities of color can thrive, none of our communities truly can.

“The time is now” could not be a more fitting idiom to describe the spirit and intensity of a particularly unforgettable year. From unsafe working conditions, PPE shortages, and racial injustices, to a substantial political season, on top of COVID-19 – this year was a challenge.

44 years ago, Henrietta Lee started her journey working for the city of San Francisco as a Senior Clerk Typist at Youth Guidance Center and she has never looked back. Wearing many hats and serving thousands of community members over the years, Henrietta has carved a special place in the hearts of her colleagues and the youth she impacted.

SEIU 1021 members at Dominican University recently showcased the power of our union, as they were able to secure a settlement totaling around $750,000 for their members during recent negotiations.

Adjunct faculty at the university were negotiating their second contract as members of SEIU 1021, having joined our union in early 2015. Adjunct professors often have considerable less security than tenured, full-time faculty, making the power of a union essential in their fights for improved wages and benefits.

This month, our members at Marin Municipal Water District overwhelmingly ratified our next contract. Workers were able to secure this agreement because of our strong membership numbers and because we speak with one voice as a union in our political engagement with elected leaders and also with managers at our worksite.

Now, just like in every election year, we need to elect candidates and pass measures that will protect those vital services and honor our work. But this year, the stakes are higher than they have ever been. 

We understand the importance of winning the economic, racial, environmental, and immigrant justice that we all deserve. That is why we participate in the political process by volunteering and voting for these endorsements to help elect candidates and pass measures that bring us closer to that goal.

It is Election Day! Volunteer to get the vote out locally, and in the battleground state of Nevada– where early voting numbers are lower than expected.

We are asking members to participate in phone banking and other outreach initiatives to help us elect candidates who will fight for us and pass measures that will benefit working families.
