On Wednesday, July 25 members from SEIU locals from throughout our state will interview candidates for California’s 4th Congressional District. Following the interviews, we will discuss and vote on who we should endorse in the upcoming election.

Advocating for Justice in Our Courts
This spring court workers flooded the halls of our state capital to advocate for those seeking justice.

As court workers and advocates for our communities, we know access to justice is directly tied to income. In the trial court system, when court reporters are not provided, only the wealthy can afford to hire a reporter. Low-income workers, juggling multiple jobs, are unable access justice due to restricted public hours and closed facilities. People who cannot afford money bail often sit awaiting a court date resulting in a loss of income to their household.

A Lesson from West Virginia

West Virginia teachers have shown that despite the failure of politicians to protect the rights of working people to organize, working people standing together are unstoppable. Striking teachers have shown that no court case or legislation can stop the power of solidarity and the willingness to stand up for justice.

West Virginia is among the handful of “right to work-for less” states, a fate that may soon be shared by California after the Supreme Court rules on Janus v AFSCME.

City of Hayward Members Fight for—and Win—a New Contract

After several months of contract negotiations and high-visibility actions, Hayward workers have approved a new contract. The three-year agreement includes raises, in addition to other gains that would help workers continue to live and work in Hayward.

“By standing together, we let the City know that everyone who works for the City of Hayward deserves respect and a fair contract. We demanded it, and we got it,” said Clerical Chapter Acting President Felicia Sandoval.

More than 2,200 City of Oakland Workers Represented by SEIU 1021 Ratify Contract with the City of Oakland

Bringing more than ten months of bargaining to a close, the Oakland City workers represented by SEIU Local 1021 ratified a two-year contract with the City of Oakland on Friday, February 23.

With provisions that increase worker safety, provide cost of living adjustments, and address the working conditions of police and fire communications dispatchers, the contract takes steps to improve public services to Oakland residents and businesses.
