California College of the Arts students walk out in protest of staff layoffs
The CCA Student Union organized the walkout and blackout in support of the CCA Staff Union

A year ago, staff at California College of the Arts (CCA) went on a four-day strike in protest of the administration’s illegal labor practices, pushing for a first contract that took over two years (and that strike) to secure. Last month, CCA administration announced their intention to lay off 8-10% of frontline staff in response to lower than expected enrollment – even as they continue to pay their president, Stephen Beal, over $580,000 – more than any other private university president in the Bay Area with the exception of Stanford.

CCA Staff, Adjuncts Ratify Contract with Big Improvements

Last week, staff and adjunct faculty at California College of the Arts voted overwhelmingly—by 98% and 96% respectively–to ratify the tentative agreements reached in the wake of a four-day unfair labor practice (ULP) strike February 8-11. The contract is the first for CCA staff, who voted by a supermajority to form a union with SEIU 1021 in 2019, and the second for CCA adjuncts, who formed their union with SEIU 1021 in 2014.

CCA administration’s bargaining team, led by notorious union-busting lawyer Mike Vartain, has stalled, dragged its feet, and done everything possible to avoid addressing workers’ primary concerns: a living wage and basic job security.

California College of the Arts Workers Hit the Picket Lines Tomorrow in First Strike at a California Private College Since 1976
Despite administration’s assertions that an agreement is imminent, they have made no real effort to find common ground on their staff’s priorities—and their staff are done waiting patiently after over 2 years of negotiations and violations of labor law

On Tuesday, February 8, California College of the Arts (CCA) will make history in a way administration might not be proud of, as its staff goes on strike in protest of its unfair labor practices. A huge majority of faculty, including adjunct professors and ranked faculty, are expected to honor the picket lines.
