SEIU 1021 members at San Francisco Unified Schools move closer to a strike as district violates labor law, fails to meet basic demands
Saturday morning found about 200 members gathered for strike school, the strike vote kickoff, and solidarity
On Saturday, September 30, about 200 SEIU 1021 members from San Francisco Unified School District showed up to cast their votes to authorize a potential strike as the district continues to fall short in negotiations.
Union members wore purple in solidarity, chanted, voted, participated in an informative strike school to better understand their rights as workers, asked questions, and enjoyed lunch together.

July 12 was supposed to be payday for San Francisco Unified School District staff. Yet, nearly 1,000 of its lowest-paid, hardworking employees, including lunch servers, nutrition workers, janitors, and clerks who help keep San Francisco schools running every day, did not receive their much-needed checks, instead receiving a last-minute email from the district stating that it was “unable to implement that timeline successfully.” Workers were informed their checks wouldn’t be available until two weeks later, on July 26.

Last Thursday, May 18, when San Francisco Unified School District’s management contract negotiations team came to the table, they got a little more than they’d bargained for. Over 85 rank and file SEIU 1021 SFUSD members, including custodians, nutrition service workers, and clerical staff, showed up and gave them an earful about how the poverty wages the district pays its classified employees, combined with ongoing payroll problems and staffing shortages that make workloads unsustainable, are damaging the district’s schools and students.

There is a term to describe when an employer does not pay its employees what it owes them for work performed: wage theft. For over a year now, since rolling out its boondoggle of a new payroll system, San Francisco Unified School District has been committing wage theft. Despite claims from its new superintendent that a new “command center” would make sure shortchanged employees are made whole, that has not materialized, as help tickets continue to go unanswered, calls go unreturned, and desperate employees who go in person are turned away.
