SEIU 1021 Mendocino County chapters release report addressing Mendocino County’s housing crisis causes, offering recommendations
Dec. 20, 2021: “I can think of a half a dozen employees that the County has offered jobs to here on the coast, but they had to turn down the offer, because they couldn’t find anywhere to live,” reported one Mendocino County employee in a survey. “The average apartment rents for about $1200 to $1300 per month. The rental agency requires your income to be three times the rent. I make around $35 per hour, and I can’t even afford that. How is someone who makes minimum wage or is a single parent supposed to find a place to live?” laments another survey respondent.
Hayward Unified School District Staff, Educators, and Families Rally to Save Schools from Closure
Following a massive march, rally, and hours of public comment, the Board of Education voted to close only 2 of the 4 schools on the list.

SEIU 1021 members mobilize to fight Hayward School closures
November 15, 2021: Declining K-12 school enrollment is a problem statewide, especially in the Bay Area. Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) management plans to close several schools, blaming a combination of lower enrollment, expensive repairs needed to facilities, and a budget shortfall. They appear poised to close up to eight schools–a huge disruption to school cultures, social communities, and education programs after a year and a half of turmoil from the pandemic.

OUSD Management Continues to Ignore Staff’s COVID Safety Demands
October 25, 2021: Nearly three weeks ago, on October 6, the SEIU 1021 Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) bargaining team, alongside Oakland Education Association (OEA), delivered extremely important proposals in our contract negotiations with OUSD management: a COVID-19 safety protocol designed to ensure that management started protecting the health and safety of District students, District employees, and the larger OUSD community.
GUSD workers reached a Tentative Agreement with the District to protect workers and students
When workers at Geyserville Unified School District (GUSD) received news that schools would reopen in April of 2021 for in-person learning, members and chapter leaders immediately began negotiating a health and safety plan with the District that would protect students, workers, and educators.

Sac City Unified School District Classified Workers
Just before midnight on Monday, April 19, a marathon mediation session between Sacramento City Unified School District and classified workers represented by SEIU 1021 produced a tentative agreement (TA) that both sides believe will allow SCUSD to safely welcome all students back to in-person learning. As a result of this TA, the Unfair Labor Practice strike that had been scheduled for Thursday and Friday is now canceled.
The SFUSD Board of Education Rafities the Tentative Agreements Between the Unions of SFUSD and the School District
In a special meeting on Tuesday, February 23, the SFUSD Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the tentative agreements between the school district and SEIU 1021, IFPTE Local 21, and IUOE Local 39 for safely returning to in-person learning. This moment marks a momentous gain in the movement to safely reopen schools for students and workers in SFUSD and lays the groundwork for similar agreements that are sure to come in other school districts across the Bay Area.
