Mills College staff takes a significant step in building their union.
On November 21, staff at Mills College formally requested recognition of their union in a letter to President Elizabeth Hillman, stating, “We seek to cultivate a partnership with College administration that honors the overwhelming support for unionization among Mills staff.”
The approximately 200 workers who could win their unions serve students in a wide range of non-faculty jobs in the library, administrative offices, art museum, IT services, and by supporting the College’s academic programs.

Charter Schools Costing West Contra Costa Unified School District $27.9 Million Each Year
Charter schools, publicly funded but privately-operated schools that lie outside the control of local school districts, are driving public schools into financial crisis. The loss of tens of millions of dollars each year for each school district is taking its toll on the resources and overall quality education students need and deserve. From layoffs and cuts to jobs in education to closures of libraries and entire schools, charter schools lack accountability to local communities even as they drain their school districts’ finances and academic programs.

As cities, counties, schools, and other public agencies finalize their budgets, workers who provide vital services are speaking out and ensuring that elected officials are prioritizing programs that put working families first.
At budget forums across city, Oakland workers are standing up to tell City Council members that homelessness, affordable housing, and cleaner, safer streets are priorities for everyone who lives and works in the city, and that these problems demand restored staffing and funding levels.
On May Day, Gov. Newsom Walks in the Shoes of Los Rios Community College Workers
On May 1, International Workers Day, Gov. Gavin Newsom worked alongside Brenda Baker, a groundskeeper, and Maria Arambula, a custodian, at American River College. Both Brenda and Maria work for the Los Rios Community College District, and they spoke to the governor on about the struggles facing working people in our state.

(Sacramento, CA) – SEIU 1021, the union representing 2,000 Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) workers, released the following statement on the teachers’ strike scheduled for Thursday, April 11. SEIU 1021 represents bus drivers, instructional aides, custodians, teachers’ aides, clerks, child care attendants, food service workers, and special education aides across the district’s 81 schools.

Oakland Teachers Ratify a Contract and End Historic 7-Day Strike
On Sunday, March 3rd, members of Oakland Educators Association (OEA) voted to approve a contract that gets teachers on the path to better raises and smaller class sizes. The contract ratification ended a 7-day strike that united the community.
Teachers, classified workers, and students continue to speak out against the District’s cuts to programs and staff. Hundreds of students, joined by community allies, filled the Board meeting on March 4th.
Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Classified Staff Honor Teacher Picket Lines in Sympathy Strike
OUSD Classified workers including 1,000 instructional specialists, school security officers, administrative workers and other workers honored picket lines in support of striking teachers.
