Statement from SEIU 1021 President Theresa Rutherford on Laguna Honda Hospital’s Approval for Medi-Cal Recertification
Today is an exciting day for SEIU 1021 members at Laguna Honda Hospital: After over a year of hard work, Laguna Honda has been approved for recertification by the Medi-Cal program, which over 95% of our patients rely on. This victory cannot be overstated. It not only means that Laguna Honda’s doors will remain open, that our medically fragile patients will not be shipped elsewhere to their detriment, and that our members will keep their jobs.

City of Oakland workers are are in a crisis of unsafe working conditions. Department after department has reported attacks, abuse, and unsafe assignments.

Public Employment Relations Board rules San Francisco City & County workers have right to strike
The Board struck down provisions in the city charter prohibiting strikes
On July 24, the California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) struck down provisions in the San Francisco City Charter that violated city workers’ rights.
On the list of violations: prohibiting city workers from striking; requiring termination of striking city workers; and stripping workers rehired after striking of their seniority.

SEIU 1021 members win big from Butte County to Solano County
SEIU 1021 members at the Superior Court of Butte County achieved a significant victory by campaigning and securing a $16,700 retention bonus. Jennifer L. Hunt, an official court reporter from Butte County, emphasized the importance of this achievement: “I work tirelessly to provide our county with the quality record its citizens deserve. We need additional reporters to support our efforts. That can only be accomplished with a competitive wage.”
San Francisco Civil Grand Jury confirms what we’ve said for years: It’s time to staff up San Francisco
On Thursday, June 22, 2023, the Civil Grand Jury for the 2022-to-2023 term published its “Time to Get to Work: San Francisco’s Hiring Crisis” report. The report describes how the City and County of San Francisco faces a crisis of excessive turnover and lack of recruitment in programs that address the city’s problems with drug addiction, untreated mental health disorders, and housing insecurity.

Interfaith In the Park: A Community-Building Event for Deep East Oakland

Interfaith in the Park is a great opportunity for community building, spiritual healing, and outreach as One Oakland. The Interfaith in the Park event will provide free safety, wellness, and job resources to our leaders in Deep East Oakland. There will be music, food, remarks from the Mayor, and a meet and greet with the new City Administrator.
