On Friday, October 13, workers at the 2224 Shattuck Starbucks store in Berkeley went on strike to demand that Starbucks management:

  • Return to previous dress code enforcement, as directed by national labor law

  • Ensure functioning lights in the storage room

  • Establish the standard that if any part of the store reaches 77 degrees, partners can close the store for safety and will be paid in full for their scheduled shifts

Members of SEIU 1021 and other unions were thrilled to get a surprise opportunity to meet the new U.S. Senator from California, Laphonza Butler, last Wednesday, October 11. The former president of SEIU 2015 who was appointed to the seat left empty by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s passing came by the SEIU 1021 office in San Francisco for a meet-and-greet with labor leaders and activists.

A trailblazer for women, she was the first woman president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and the first woman mayor of San Francisco before becoming the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from California. As a U.S. Senator, she was the first woman member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the first woman to chair the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and the first woman to chair the Senate Intelligence Committee.
