Oakland, CA – To protest 2,611 vacant positions – nearly 25% of the entire County workforce – Alameda county workers and community members will picket on Monday, February 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lake Merritt Amphitheater in Oakland. The vacancy crisis, the workers say, is coupling with increased demands for services and causing dangerous backlogs in critical departments including Children and Family Services, Aging and Adult Services, Welfare Benefits Administration, Child Support Services, Healthcare Service, Mental Health Services, and WIC (Women, Infants and Children).

SF City Attorney issues subpoena to nonprofit Felton Institute amidst unprecedented union-busting by a city-funded nonprofit
On February 7, SF Supervisor Myrna Melgar announced that the San Francisco City Attorney had issued a subpoena that will legally compel Felton management to appear before the full Board of Supervisors and answer questions about their unlawful anti-worker behavior.
The Legacy of Brad Lomax: A Pioneering Advocate for Disability Rights

Bradford Clyde “Brad” Lomax was a Black activist and one of the pioneers of the disability-rights movement. Through his work with the East Oakland Center for Independent Living, the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, and his role in passing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Brad Lomax raised awareness of the intersection of disability and race, paving the way for greater progress in securing the rights of people with disabilities.

SEIU 1021’s elected bargaining team continues to make good progress at the bargaining table, with another four tentative agreements (TAs) signed last Thursday, January 26.
Thursday’s new TAs included improvements to bereavement leave and personal leave, an increased uniform allowance, and new flex schedule language
Coffee tastes better when its unionized: Peet’s Coffee workers hold rally after winning first union vote in North America
After voting fourteen to one to become the first unionized Peet’s Coffee location in the United States, Peet’s Coffee workers, now members of the Service Employees International Union Local 1021, held a rally on Saturday, January 28, 2023, in front of the coffeehouse in North Davis. The vote comes after nearly nine months of workers organizing with SEIU Local 1021 and Workers United, an SEIU affiliate organizing workers on the “Starbucks Workers United” campaign.

There is a term to describe when an employer does not pay its employees what it owes them for work performed: wage theft. For over a year now, since rolling out its boondoggle of a new payroll system, San Francisco Unified School District has been committing wage theft. Despite claims from its new superintendent that a new “command center” would make sure shortchanged employees are made whole, that has not materialized, as help tickets continue to go unanswered, calls go unreturned, and desperate employees who go in person are turned away.

Our most heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who succumbed to his injuries three days after a brutal beating by five Memphis police officers at a traffic stop.
