Collective Response to Divisions in the Workplace & Beyond

The more our worksites are united, the easier it is to solve problems and move against bullying, conflict, and other divisions that weaken us. In this interactive workshop, we’ll practice member-to-member communication tools that help us increase respect amongst coworkers, fight oppression, and collectively respond to workplace problems.

Through a group discussion and series of exercises, members will be provided basic tools to cost out proposals and settlements and to think strategically about using that info. A calculator and willingness to do math are required.
Labor Management Committee: Tips & Traps

Labor Management Committees (LMCs) can be a useful strategy for representing members’ interests when new issues arise mid-contract. On the downside, LMCs can be a way for management to appear to listen without actually doing anything, tying up important issues in endless investigation/conversation. At their worst, LMCs can be utilized by management to delay or divide the union. No prior LMC experience is needed to participate in a 1.5-hour Zoom discussion on the tips and traps of LMCs.

This Zoom workshop will give you the chance to learn tips and practice your role when representing members called into closed-door meetings with management through interactive exercises, a video simulation, and a discussion.
Members who took a basic steward class this past year are being invited to sharpen their skills when representing co-workers in investigatory interviews during a one-and-a-half-hour Zoom discussion.

In this in-person class, we will identify information that should be included in a written grievance, discuss dos and don’ts for writing formal grievances, and individually practice writing. Designed for experienced stewards and/or those who have completed Intermediate or Advanced Steward classes as a pre-requisite.

Help a child in need: Drop off new coats and toys anytime before December 15
Next Tuesday, December 19, SEIU 1021, SEIU 2015 and Oakland Mayor
Sheng Thao will be giving away literally thousands of coats and
toys to local kids who might otherwise not have much under the
tree this year.
But we’ve got a problem: More families than expected have signed
up for the giveaway, and we need more coats. We are still 500
coats short. We need your help to make sure local kids
stay warm this winter!
Members celebrate 2023 victories at North Coast Unity Event
Thursday, December 7, camaraderie and celebration filled the air as more than 100 SEIU 1021 members in Region B gathered in Santa Rosa for a much-anticipated North Coast Unity Party. While festive, this event was not only a party, but a vibrant testament to the strength and solidarity of our union.
Labor for peace in Palestine: SEIU 1021 member leaders hold teach-in
Thursday, December 7, SEIU 1021 and Jobs With Justice SF came together to host an online teach-in titled “Labor for Peace in Palestine.” This teach-in occurred almost exactly a month after the SEIU 1021 Executive Board issued a statement endorsing the “Ceasefire Now” movement — a statement calling for all armed conflict to cease in Israel and Palestine.
SEIU 1021 Executive Board Statement Calls for Ceasefire in Gaza
Monday, November 6, the SEIU 1021 Executive Board held an urgent meeting after hearing concerns from dozens of members across Northern California about the need for the union to join labor unions and organizations around the world about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Executive Board members discussed the situation at length and decided to issue the following statement as a first step.
