STRIKE: Fast-food workers ask, “Which side are you on?”
November 15, 2021: Last week, over 600 fast-food workers across California walked off the job, striking because of health violations, workplace violence, and wage theft, demanding politicians answer the question, “Which side are you on?” If the answer is the workers, they will support the passage of AB 257, the FAST Recovery Act–anything less means supporting abusive fast-food corporations like McDonald’s, Burger King, and Jack in the Box.
Yes! I will speak up for Head Start!

We Mourn the Tragic Death of Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan
“Today I join our community in grieving a massive loss. Wilma Chan has passed away, taken from us far too soon.
She spent her life in service to her community, as an Alameda County Supervisor and in the California State Assembly. She was a beacon for the Asian-American and Pacific Islander Community, as our state’s first Asian-American Assembly Majority Leader. She was a dedicated and tenacious advocate for healthcare, affordable housing, families, our elders, and our children.
SEIU 1021 Members Lead the Way Toward a Safer Oakland
On October 19, Oakland’s City Council unanimously voted to move forward with establishing a trailblazing program called MACRO: Mobile Assistance Community Responders of Oakland. MACRO will expand the city’s public safety programs by adding a non-police response option for non-violent emergencies. The program will be staffed by civilians with the medical and mental health training to handle these non-violent emergencies. The people doing that work will be SEIU 1021 members, with living-wage compensation packages that will be comparable to other first responders in Oakland.
Gig workers take the fight worldwide on the Gig Worker Global Day of Action
App workers worldwide held a series of rallies on November 3, the first anniversary of the passage of California Proposition 22. Gig workers are demanding that companies like Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash pay drivers a fair wage and respect their basic rights, including their right to form a union. In California, the “Gig Worker Global Day of Action” — which took place across nine countries — was anchored by protests in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
1021 members in San Joaquin, Amador, and Calaveras counties are showcasing their union strength
Recent contract victories by members at the Calaveras County Water District, the County of Amador, and the San Joaquin Superior Court have showcased just how important it is for our communities to fund crucial frontline services—and our strength as a union has shown what we can accomplish when we work together.

La Clínica workers reach out to their community for support in their fight to improve services
SEIU 1021 members at La Clínica de la Raza in Oakland have been fighting for a new contract that invests in frontline workers as well as increases staffing to improve services for the community. La Clínica has gotten millions of dollars from federal and local funding to provide quality services throughout the pandemic but has yet to address the issues that plague their tirelessly working essential workers.
