People are dying at the border and in detention camps, and the moral fiber of our society hangs in the balanced tipped by a hateful administration. What we do—or don’t do—now will echo for decades to come. Across the country communities are holding vigils to say NO to inhumane migrant detention. Children should not be put in cages. Children should be united with their families. Families belong together.

Two weeks ago, the City’s representatives walked away from the bargaining table, claiming negotiations were at an impasse. This claim was a lie: we were hard at work, passing proposals and counterproposals, so we immediately filed an unfair labor practice charge against them.
On Monday, City Council passed a budget. The budget didn’t address our issues adequately, and on Tuesday, our members stormed City Hall with Local 21 and delivered a message to City Administrator Sabrina Landreth: get your representatives back to the table, and tell them to bargain in good faith.
Workers’ Rights in the Gig Economy
Online platform workers are organizing together to demand living wages, benefits, transparency, and a voice on the job. They’re exposing the ugly truth behind the business practices of billion-dollar gig corporations that profit off of their hard work without following labor standards.
C.L. Dellums African American Leadership School
The C.L. Dellums African American Leadership School will start on April 27 and continue for 5 additional bi-weekly Saturdays until June 29. The UC Berkeley Labor Ed. Center is offering these educational courses, and sponsored by the Contra Costa County Labor Council; the United Steelworkers Local 5; and the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists.
What you will learn: the organizing track will focus on various elements on Organizing 101; the big picture track will examine mass incarceration; immigration; and economic development.

Martin Sheen, 1,200 Graduating Seniors, and Guests Support Santa Clara Univ. Adjuncts and Lecturers’ Efforts to Unionize
On June 16, at Santa Clara University’s commencement ceremony, adjuncts and lecturers’ campaign for a free and fair election on unionization got a big shout out during the keynote speech by actor Martin Sheen. As a labor, environmental, and anti-war activist, as well as a life-long union member, he was willing to treat his commencement speech as an opportunity to urge the SCU administration to grant adjuncts and lecturers a fair and free vote to unionize.
