In a huge victory, San Francisco’s public workers secure the right to strike

In 2009, the City amended the Charter to deliberately rig the collective bargaining system in the City’s favor by creating an arbitrary deadline to complete contract negotiations and a harsh penalty for the unions and their members that do not meet the deadline. These changes to the Charter also made it effectively impossible for workers to use the strongest tool available to us – the right to strike – to advocate for ourselves and the community we serve. As a result, the scales have been tipped in management’s favor for years each time we go to the table to bargain a new contract.

California College of the Arts Staff Vote by 97% to Authorize a Strike
CCA administration has spent the 2 years since they formed their union stalling, delaying, and violating federal labor law, and union members have had enough.

Dec. 13, 2021: In what would be the first strike at a private arts college since 2012–and the latest in a number of strikes in colleges and universities–California College of the Arts (CCA) staff voted by 97% this week to authorize their contract negotiating team to call a strike if administration does not put an immediate stop to violations of labor law and bargain in good faith.

When Will the Court Withdraw Their Offensive Concessionary Proposals?
Bargaining Update for Dec. 14, 2021

“We’re making some progress at the bargaining table,” says Chapter President Kasha Clarke, “But we still have a long way to go.”

After more rounds of meetings, the Court still has not withdrawn any of their insulting concessionary proposals, which would take away things our members need, like binding arbitration, the ability to request transfers, the soft vacation cap, our ability to go on sympathy strike to support other working people fighting for their rights, and even our ability to take unpaid leave time instead of using all our sick time.

Delays, Disrespect, & Disappointment
Bargaining Update for Dec. 1, 2021

Your elected bargaining team has met multiple times with management: the court reporters six times and the general unit five times. Our team has made common-sense proposals that will improve wages and working conditions and expand our ability to fulfill the Court’s mission of bringing justice to the community. Management’s response has been completely inadequate, including multiple attacks on our union rights.

So far, management’s proposals include:

Instead of getting Christmas bonuses, La Clínica workers have been left out in the cold this holiday season

This holiday season, while many workers are expecting Christmas bonuses and possibly gifts from their employers as gratitude for work well done, some of our most essential workers are still fighting their scrooge-like bosses for better work conditions and higher wages. La Clínica de la Raza’s recent last, best, and final offer contained only a 2% guaranteed increase.
