Hundreds of Alameda County workers and community members picket to say “STAFF UP NOW!”

On Monday, February 13, hundreds of Alameda County workers and community members rallied at Lake Merritt Amphitheater to protest the county’s nearly 25% vacancy rate, with 2,611 unfilled positions.

The rally started with a moment of silence for Richard Valle, a longtime champion of labor and progressive causes across the East Bay, who recently passed away. The workers planted flags to represent the 2,611 vacancies, and marched to 1221 Oak St. to deliver a letter demanding the Board of Supervisors solve the staffing crisis.

As Mediation Continues, PURPLE UP EVERY FRIDAY
February 2023 Union Update

As Mediation Continues, PURPLE UP EVERY FRIDAY

Port management continues to push for takeaways in mediation.

They want to:

  • Force us to accept a no-strike clause
  • Reject our swing shift and graveyard shift differentials
  • Deny us a fair raise as inflation continues to hurt our members
  • Refuse dedicated safety training for Port workers
  • Reduce the rights of custodians to have their bidded shifts

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We need to purple up every Friday to show management that we’re united and we won’t accept these takeaways.

“If nothing changes, there will be nobody left to do this work.”
In the face of Alameda County’s 2,611 vacant positions, county workers and community members will rally and picket Monday, February 13 at 11 a.m. at Lake Merritt Amphitheater (near 12th St. and Lake Merritt Blvd.)

Oakland, CA – To protest 2,611 vacant positions – nearly 25% of the entire County workforce – Alameda county workers and community members will picket on Monday, February 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lake Merritt Amphitheater in Oakland. The vacancy crisis, the workers say, is coupling with increased demands for services and causing dangerous backlogs in critical departments including Children and Family Services, Aging and Adult Services, Welfare Benefits Administration, Child Support Services, Healthcare Service, Mental Health Services, and WIC (Women, Infants and Children).
